Nigel Hogg Visit

As part of the External Speaker Programme, on 17 October, students enjoyed an engaging presentation by Nigel Hogg, Apprenticeship Manager at the University of East London.  Nigel, who has worked for many companies throughout his career, notably London Underground and Ford Motor Company, is an engineer by profession and, more recently, has been involved in teaching and education.  He organises the University’s Degree Apprenticeship programmes and explained that this is a fast-growing sector with new programmes being introduced all the time.   Not all programmes are business-related; there are also opportunities in the healthcare industry, digital technologies and engineering to name but a few.  Nigel talked about the many companies offering apprenticeships and stressed the importance, particularly with the larger organisations like TfL and BT, of researching dates when they are accepting applications and the assessment process.

One of Nigel’s key messages about applying for apprenticeships was to give yourself a competitive edge by doing something different, outside of your studies.  Candidates who had volunteered or had a hobby or participated in schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh Award were the ones that stood out, he maintained.
